The success-oriented, cynical side of me wanted to take a swing at Jeff Gordon's decision to extend the contract of crew chief Steve Letarte. But the other side of me, the one that has been reshaped by harsh reality in recent months, is absolutely certain that personal loyalties can produce great long-term results.

The Letarte extension was announced late last week. It is one of those "multi-year" jobs.

The announcement had to raise both eyebrows, questions and ire among fans of the four-time champion. Since Letarte took over the job from championship-winning Robbie Loomis in the fall of 2005, there have been no championships and just 10 victories.
