Performance Benefits Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital
By Lukas Johnson - Charlotte Observer
About a dozen students at Piedmont School of Music & Dance recently raised $ 2,500 for the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital through a special performance of the classic folk tale "Peter and the Wolf."
The students performed a colorful dance rendition May 16 for a special audience, including NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, his wife, Ingrid, and 15 other family members, as well as Martha Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s mom. The show took place in the Hamrick Theater on the campus of Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.
Performers raised the money via ticket sales and online donations. The Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation, CMC-NorthEast and Piedmont School of Music & Dance helped promote the event through social media.
The money will be used for therapeutic play items and will help support art, music and relaxation therapy programs. Hospital officials estimate hundreds will benefit from the donation.
Laura Dearman, 16, of Statesville has been with the Kannapolis-based school for seven years. A cancer survivor, she was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 2. She performed as the Bird and also recently earned a lifetime scholarship to Joffrey Ballet in New York City.
Laura said a strong children's hospital can make the difference between life and death.
